Ingredients
For the apple filling:
4 Gala apples
2 tbsp raw cane sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
For the crumble topping:
1/4 cup butter or margarine of choice
1/2 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup quick oatmeal (gluten free/uncontaminated, if needed)
1/4 cup almond flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
Method
-
Preheat oven to 350°F.
-
Peel apples (if preferred) and cut into thin slices.
-
Mix apple slices in a bowl with cane sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
-
In a separate bowl, mix butter/margarine, and brown sugar with a fork until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and mix until oats are evenly distributed.
-
Transfer spiced apples to a baking dish, reserving any liquid that has come out (this prevents that apples from becoming soupy when cooking).
-
Carefully distribute crumble topping over apples.
-
Bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
-
Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before eating.
Notes
-
If you do not like the chunky texture of the oats, you can blend up the oats into oat flour (in a blender or food processor) or substitute for more almond flour.
-
Quinoa flakes are a great substitute for oatmeal.
-
For extra crunch and flavour, try adding 1/4 cup of nuts or seeds to your crumble topping. Chopped almonds, walnuts, and/or pecans are a crowd favourite, and pumpkin or sunflower seeds add a seasonal aroma to this dessert.
