The Best Holistic Cure for a Sore Throat

Ingredients

boiling water
1/4 small lemon, sliced
nub of ginger (size of the top of your thumb), sliced
1 tbsp raw honey

Method

  1. Add sliced lemon and ginger to a mug.
  2. Spoon honey into mug.
  3. Pour hot water over the spoon you used for your honey to make sure you get every last bit melted into the tea.
  4. Stir everything together and allow to cool to drinking temperature (hot enough to sooth your throat, but not hot enough to burn you).

Notes:

  1. The lemon in the tea acts as an astringent to clean the system of bacteria and other germs. Also, as a citrus fruit, it contains vitamin C, which we all know helps to prevent colds and other nasty ailments. I would recommend against using bottled lemon juice, as these usually contain added sulfites, which slow down digestion and can even cause breathing difficulties for those who are sensitive.
  2. The ginger has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which is why it has been used for years for its medicinal properties. It helps reduce muscle soreness, so it is helpful for relaxing your tense throat. It is also effective against nausea, which is why this drink can also be used for morning sickness by soon-to-be mothers (or for your hangover)!
  3. The honey soothes the throat in many ways as well, as it has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial AND anti-fungal properties. I usually like to use a medicinal grade manuka honey, but this past week I used my Nude Bee Honey. This is raw honey that is made in Canada, and has a ton of flavours to fit different preferences!
  4. If you have been eating a lot of sugary sweets or products with added sugar leading up to your scratchy throat, I recommend that you make this drink without the added honey. A spoonful of honey is amazing to boost your immune system when you are starting to feel sick. However, if you have been eating an excess of sugar lately, your immune system will already be run down from that excess intake, so it is best to avoid sugar as you are working to get better.
