There are hundreds of complicated snack recipes on the internet these days, but who really has the time to make something complicated every single week for every single occasion? Me neither!
Trail mix is the perfect snack for busy work/school weeks, family holidays, road trips, and, you won’t believe this one, when you’re actually on the trail! Like the traditional way of making trail mix, you grab what’s convenient and throw it all together to make the perfect snack. It keeps better than most snacks, tastes better than having just one flavour, and when it’s made to share, everybody gets what they like!
The following is a list of trail mixes that I love or that my friends love, for every occasion. Most of these can also be made into Trail Mix Chocolate Bark when you have a bit more time on your hands (not so much the Road Snacks, unless you like meat sticks with chocolate, I’m not judging!) Even if you don’t find a mix that you would like, I hope this list will inspire you to mix some flavours that you’ve never thought of before. I’ll also provide a cheat sheet at the end that can help you mix and match to build your own. So, pick your mix and have fun!
1. Monkey Mix
banana chips, peanuts, coconut flakes, M&Ms (for Monkey & Mix, obviously!)
2. Christmas Mix
pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, cashews
This recipe is best when you take a bit of your extra holiday time and make them into Honey Roasted Christmas Mix.
- 1kg mixed nuts
- 50g (~1/4 cup) butter
- 2 tbps honey
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp sea salt
Preheat your oven to 350*F/180*C. Melt honey and butter together (on the stove or in the microwave). Toss to coat the nuts in the honey butter mixture and paprika. Spread evenly onto baking trays (usually 2 large baking trays), then bake for 20-30 minutes until golden, stirring halfway. After removing them from the oven, sprinkle with sea salt while still warm. Serve as a gift, or in a large bowl for everyone to dig into!
dried cherries, dark chocolate chips/chunks, almonds, pecans, sea salt
4. White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie
white chocolate chips, macadamia nuts, mini sugar cookies, *bonus: dried cranberries or dried mango (depending on your preference)
5. Movie Night
popcorn, pretzels, M&M’s, Twizzlers bites (or nibs), Reese’s peanut butter cup minis
6. Maximum Cheeze
Doritos, cheddar Goldfish crackers, Cheetos, mini pretzels, sun chips
My take on Munchies snack mix. You can basically just buy Munchies and Goldfish crackers and mix them up. Plus, there is no need to buy flavour blasted Goldfish, since the powder from all of the other snacks gets on them!
7. Classic Gorp
raisins, peanuts, cashews, chocolate chips or M&M’s
8. Just Trust Me
cheddar Goldfish crackers, milk chocolate chips, butter popcorn (I’ve also been told that this is good with caramel popcorn and mini marshmallows!)
9. Canadian Trail
pumpkin seeds, shelled sunflower seeds, dried apple chips, golden raisins, bitesize shredded wheat cereal
10. Cereal Mixer
Honey Comb Cereal, Shreddies, freeze dried strawberries, banana chips, mini marshmallows (or lucky charms!)
Teddy Grahams, milk chocolate chips, mini pretzels, mini marshmallows (OR Rice Krispie square chunks!)
12. Road Snacks (whatever you can get your hands on at the gas station!)
pepperoni stick cut/ripped into chunks, beef jerky cut/ripped into chunks, pretzel bites/sticks, salted almonds and/or pistachios
13. Pumpkin Spice/Basic B
roasted pumpkin seeds, dried apple chips, pecans, maple granola, pumpkin spice
14. The Hippie
organic raw sunflower seeds, organic raw pumpkin seeds, all-natural organic granola, organic sugar free sulfite free golden raisins, organic unsweetened flaked coconut, cacao nibs (cacao vs. cocoa means it’s organic)
chocolate-covered coffee beans (to keep you awake), hazelnuts (for blood pressure, and to pair with the coffee beans), walnuts (Omega-3s for brain power), mini pretzels (for your salt cravings), banana chips (for your potassium cravings)
Pair with lots and lots of water and a 20-page assignment that’s due tomorrow!
