A few weeks ago I ordered (for the first time!) the MissFresh meal delivery system, and yesterday I got my first of two boxes!
MissFresh delivers ready-to-cook meals weekly, pre-portioned, with easy to follow recipes. The meals are selected from a menu that is updated weekly. You may choose to get the Chef’s Box, which includes meals selected by MissFresh team. On the other hand, you may want to spend a little extra per meal for the Custom Box, where you can choose from all of the menu options. When you order Custom Boxes, you are also given the option to get extra meals per week, though you will still be paying per meal. They also have a Vegetarian Box option, and a Kilo Solution Box, which has healthy, calorie-wise recipes created by MissFresh’s Dr. Isabelle Huot. The Kilo Solution and Vegetarian recipes of the week are always available in the Custom Boxes as well!
I had forgotten that I had set up this service, so finding my week’s groceries on my doorstep Monday morning was a very welcome surprise. They deliver the food in an insulated box, so if it’s delivered before you get home from work or school the food won’t be spoiled. They also source their products locally so that you receive the freshest, most flavourful, and most nutrient-dense ingredients. This is what the contents of my box looked like:
The portioned bags made for simple storage and kept a clean appearance. Plus I couldn’t stop talking about how cute everything was as I kept digging into the box!!
I signed up to receive 4 meals this week, each with 2 portions. This week, I received Lemony Roasted Chicken with Salsa Verde, Mahi-Mahi Burgers with Spicy Mayo, Lemony Broccoli Rabe and Sausages, and Mushroom Risotto. All of which were super appealing to me, which is pretty rare, as I’ve been known to be a picky little foodie. I’m nervous about next week’s Chef’s Box choices, but I’ll entertain you with that story when I receive it next week.
The box also included 4 recipe cards and a welcome letter. I was very impressed with the welcome letter, as a food safety freak, since it included safe storage, handling and temperature guidelines. It also highlighted how to dispose of their their packaging, which is recyclable for the most part (even the ice packs are recyclable and biodegradable).
I have prepared three of the meals already and had different reactions to each.
First was the Lemony Roasted Chicken with Salsa Verde. I was very impressed after having this as my first meal! I had very minor problems working with the instructions, and the food turned out just like the pictures. The salsa verde added a punch of earthy flavour, which balanced the citrusy meal, and was a surprising new flavour that I had never thought of trying before.
Next, I tried the Mahi-Mahi Burgers with Spicy Mayo. I wasn’t as impressed by this recipe. The avocado that I received was rock hard, and the burgers fell apart in the pan as I was cooking them because I didn’t have a food processor and didn’t mince the fish enough by hand. Luckily I had a ripe avocado in the fridge, so I mixed it with the cooked mahi-mahi to make it into a mahi-mahi salad on a bun instead, which turned out to be delicious! This was the first time I had ever had mahi-mahi, and I think it will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I also loved the spicy mayo and the multigrain buns, which added great flavour and texture to the dish.
Finally, I made the Mushroom Risotto, which was my favourite meal of the three. The risotto turned out perfectly al dente and tasted flipping amazing. The cute little bottle of white wine that was added mingled well with the earthy vegetables. I made a bit of garlic toast on a multigrain bun to have on the side (because I can’t get enough of carbs!).
Overall, I think the company and the concept are smart and super cute, though it is a little out of my price range being a student. I think that if you’re limited on time rather than funds, or if you are cooking for 4 rather than 2, then this is definitely worth the money. Also, with the changing weekly menus, you may often find yourself trying and liking new foods that you have never thought of trying before! The 30 minutes or less cook times are super appealing to me, too, quickly providing a balanced, home-cooked, nutritious meal without the hassle of the grocery store and measuring.
